Families Are Forever &
Six B's Board Signs
Submitted By: Janice in Utah

  • You will need (1) flat pine board 36 inches by 8 inches (1 inch thickness), crafters paint for base color (the base color on the Families are Forever board shown above is ivory), sticker stencil (from commercial sign business), crafters paint for stenciling the letters, wood stain finish (for antiquing), sandpaper, sponge, paint brushes and hanging hardware.

  • Paint your thin flat board with desired base color crafters paint - allow to dry (at least 30 min. or longer).

  • When you order your stencil sticker, it will have a piece of waxy paper on the underside of the sticker.  On the top of the entire sticker will be a clear semi-stick paper to help you put the sticker  on the board.  (You may have to request this semi-sticky paper...it is essential that you have it.  It is almost impossible to put your sticker on the board without it.)  Lay sticker on board and measure to make sure that it is straight.  Put masking tape along the top edge of the clear semi-stick paper covering to hold sticker in place to board.  Using the taped edge as your guide, fold sticker upward so that you can remove the underside waxy paper from sticker.  When waxy paper is removed, carefully return sticker to position and with something with a straight edge (we used a wallpaper smoother...but a credit card will do) smooth down your sticker to the board.  When sticker is smooth, remove the semi-stick plastic from the top of the sticker.  Smooth out excess bubbles or wrinkles, making sure that the edges around all the letters are completely stuck down for stenciling.  As long as your board is completely dry, you should have no problem pulling sticker off  board after stenciling the letters.  We did have a problem with a board painted black.  We are not sure if it was the paint used or if the paint just wasn't completely dry, but when the sticker was removed it pulled up some of the paint.

  • Using a sponge, lightly dab paint into the stencil to paint the lettering.  We used Ivory on the darker colored boards.  On the Ivory based boards red, green and navy colors were all used.

  • When letters are dry, carefully remove the sticker.

  • Sand outer edges of the board and cover edges or all surfaces (except back) with wood finish (for antiquing).  You can use light or dark finish depending on what look you want and how much you put on.

  • Spray with a finishing spray and attach your hanging hardware.
